Abstract

A couple years ago, a Nature editorial defined 'systems biology' as the scientific response to the question, What is the difference between a live cat and a dead one? 'A dead cat,' the author reasoned, 'is a collection of its component parts.' What then is a live cat? This, we cannot say. Indeed, the gap between the living and the non-living remains one of the great unsolved problems of biology, and my talk will be a meditation on what filling that gap might involve.
