                         PDE-based image processing and
                the triple-well potential for image sharpening 

The first part of the talk will be a basic review on PDE-based image processing (an emerging field in the past decade) including linear scale space and anisotropic diffusion (Perona-Malik) with some intuition behind the math and the numerics of how to implement it.

In the second part I will present my own work in this framework on image sharpening in the presence of noise formulated as a non-convex variational problem. The energy functional to be minimized incorporates a gradient-dependent potential in shape of a triple-well, a data fidelity criterion and a high order convex regularizing term.  If time permits, examples of various other PDE-based processes will be shown such as total-variation denoising, Mumford-Shah functional, active contours (snakes) and Beltrami flow color processing.
