Lectures in memory of Shimon Even (at MTA)

Shimon Even was born in Israel on June 15th, 1935.
He died on May 1st, 2004.
In addition to his pioneering research contributions
(most notably to Graph Algorithms and Cryptography),
Shimon is known for having been a highly influential educator.
He played a major role in establishing computer science
education in Israel (e.g., at the Weizmann Institute and the Technion).
He served as a source of professional inspiration and as a role model
for generations of young students and researchers.

The Academic College of Tel-Aviv Yaffo
intends to hold yearly memorial lectures in honor of Professor Shimon Even,
who served for a short period as its Vice President
and head of its Computer Science Department.
- The first lectures were given, on June 3rd 2004,
by Shimon's children:
- The 2005 lecture was given, on June 15th,
by Oded Goldreich (Weizmann Institute).
The title was
Probabilistic Proof Systems: Simple proofs that are rarely misleading.
- The 2006 lecture was given, on May 11th,
by Michael Rabin
(Hebrew University and Harvard University).
The title was Unbreakable Encryptions and Everlasting Secrets.
- The 2007 lecture was given, on May 10th,
by Reuven Bar-Yehuda (Technion).
The title was One for the price of two: a unified approach for
designing approximation algorithms.
- The 2008 lecture was given, on May 15th,
by Benny Chor (Tel-Aviv University).
The title was An elementary introduction to modern cryptography.
- The 2009 lecture was given, on May 7th,
by David Peleg (Weizmann Institute).
The title was Hansel and Gretel - a mazing story:
navigating without a map.
- The 2010 lecture was given, on May 5th,
by Moni Naor (Weizmann Institute).
The title was
Cuckoo Nesting: Modern Methods for Organizing Lookup Tables.
- The 2011 lecture was given, on May 5th,
by Avi Wigderson (Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton).
The title was
Cryptography: Secrets and Lies, Knowledge and Trust.
- The 2012 lecture was given, on May 16th,
by Amir Herzberg (Bar-Ilan University).
The title is Internet Security Challenges.
- The 2013 lecture will be given, on May 8th,
by Benny Applebaum (Tel-Aviv University).
The title is Turing vs Turing:
How to Safeguard Secrets using Hard Problems.
Taking place in the
college campus at Rabenu Yeruham 14, Yaffo.
